Plain answers to common questions. They are general information, and your dentist's advice for your own case comes first.

Visiting Nova

What happens at a first visit?

The dentist listens to your concern, examines your teeth and gums, explains what they find and goes through your options before any treatment starts. Bring these along:

  • Earlier X-rays, dental reports and prescriptions.
  • The medicines you take, plus any allergies or health conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or pregnancy.
  • Your main concern and when it started.
  • Any questions about treatment options, time and cost.

Treatments

Is a root canal painful?

The treatment is done under local anaesthesia, so most people feel pressure but not pain, similar to getting a filling. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is common and usually settles with simple care.

How long do dental implants last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, implants can last many years. How long they last depends on your gum health, bone and habits such as smoking.

After treatment

What should I do after a tooth extraction?
  • Bite gently on the gauze for 30 to 60 minutes so a clot can form.
  • For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing hard, spitting, using a straw and smoking.
  • Eat soft, cool foods and chew on the other side on the first day.
  • Take any medicines exactly as prescribed.
  • Call the clinic if bleeding does not stop with pressure, if you get a fever or swelling, or if pain gets worse after the first few days.
What should I do after a root canal?
  • Numbness fades in a few hours. Avoid chewing until it does, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.
  • Mild soreness for a few days is common.
  • Avoid hard foods on that tooth until it has its final filling or crown.
  • Come back for the final restoration as planned. A temporary filling is not meant to last.
  • Call the clinic if you have swelling, a fever, or severe pain that is getting worse.

Everyday and family care

How should I look after my teeth, and how often should I visit?

Most people do well with a check-up and cleaning every six months. If you have gum disease, braces or a history of cavities, your dentist may suggest visiting more often. In between:

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes.
  • Keep sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes where you can.
  • Replace your toothbrush about every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay.
Do you treat children?

Yes. Nova offers family and preventive care, and early visits help children get comfortable with the dentist. At home:

  • Start brushing when the first tooth appears. Use a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste under three years and a pea-sized amount from three to six.
  • Help your child brush until about age 7 or 8.
  • Do not put a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or a sugary drink.
  • Plan a first dental visit around your child's first birthday.

Pain and emergencies

What should I do if I have tooth pain or swelling?

Message us on WhatsApp as early as you can and tell us your symptoms. Swelling, fever or pain that keeps you awake should not wait.

  • Swelling of the face or jaw with fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing: go to a hospital emergency department.
  • A knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, rinse gently if dirty, keep it in milk or back in its socket, and see a dentist within the hour.
  • Do not place aspirin or other tablets on the gum.
